Abington zoning board approves five projects, delays chicken coop case

Zoning Board · Meeting of August 13, 2026

Abington Zoning Board of Appeals approves five building petitions and pushes a chicken-coop variance to September pending legal guidance on a new state standard. Assistant Chairman Robert Manning presided as Zoning Enforcement Officer Nick Jenks briefed members that state law now requires boards to weigh "practical difficulty" and housing need when granting variances. The board unanimously approved ADU variances and findings for properties at 243 Plymouth Street, 981 Bedford Street, 9 Bayberry Road and 92 Clapp Street, plus a special permit letting Adams North Realty Trust add an 11th unit at 262 Adams Street.

Science teacher Jacqueline Bupre sought a variance for a 12-by-12 chicken coop at 144 Bank Street, but a board member said, "I don't have a definition of practical difficulty," and the board continued her case, along with two related cease-and-desist appeals at 267 North Quincy Street, to September 10.
