Abington Conservation Commission Approves Pool Snack Shack, Landfill Test Pit Plan

ABINGTON — June 9, 2026 — Abington Conservation Commission unanimously approves pool snack shack replacement and landfill test pit plan at June 9 meeting. Chair Lynn Mullen presided as the commission voted to approve a notice of intent filed by Recreation Director Kelly Johnson and the Abington DPW to replace a demolished 14-by-16-foot snack shack at the 200 Park Avenue town pool with a new 14-by-24-foot prefabricated shed on a concrete slab, with special conditions prohibiting rodenticides near the pond and requiring off-site concrete truck washout. Town Manager Michael Maresco addressed the commission in support, citing the approaching summer camp season and July Fourth holiday. The commission also approved a notice of intent by the Abington Select Board for test pits at the 171 Groveland Street landfill site under a Mass. DEP solid waste mandate, adding a special condition recommending that test pits with standing water be deferred to winter months — documentation the project engineer needs to seek a timeline extension from DEP. Conservation Agent Nick Jenks reported that a Plymouth County judge signed a preliminary injunction June 2 in the contested 1212 Bedford Street wetland case, ordering work to cease and requiring the property owner to submit a restoration plan within seven days; as of the June 9 meeting no plan had been filed.
