Abington Select Board Votes to Extend Bar Hours One Hour Through July 31

ABINGTON -- June 11, 2026, Abington Select Board extends bar hours one hour under new state World Cup pilot. The board voted unanimously Thursday to opt into the Act Authorizing Municipalities to Opt In to a Temporary Pilot to Expand the Hours of Liquor Licenses, signed by Governor Maura Healey on June 8, 2026. The measure allows any on-premises pouring establishment in Abington to extend its closing hour by one hour through July 31, 2026, by submitting a written letter to the town manager, no individual board vote required. Entertainment licenses for television were included in the extension; package stores were explicitly excluded. The police chief, who expressed no objections, asked for board backing to mandate a detail at any establishment that runs into compliance trouble during the extended hours, saying of current licensees, "Our businesses have done very, very well since I've been here."
