Abington Select Board Creates Trash Advisory Committee, Approves $2 Million Water Bond

ABINGTON — June 22, 2026 — Abington Select Board votes to form a trash advisory committee and approves a $2 million water infrastructure bond at its June 22 meeting. The board unanimously created a seven-member standing trash advisory committee — four residents at large plus one member each from the Select Board, Board of Health, and Finance Committee — after member Ken Coyle argued the town needs a dedicated body to explore recycling expansion, illegal-dumping enforcement, and composting site improvements before the next hauler contract cycle. In a separate unanimous vote, the board approved the sale of $2 million in 4 percent general obligation bond anticipation notes to Fidelity Capital Markets at par plus a $16,220 premium, financing Abington's half of a $4 million joint water project with Rockland to replace 1974-era filter and pressure-vessel equipment at both towns' treatment plants. The board also seated four Conservation Commission members including three three-year terms and a one-year vacancy left by the resignation of Alex DeZantzner, appointed members to more than a dozen other town boards, and heard a data-heavy presentation from the Teen Center Initiative Committee citing a survey finding that nearly 10 percent of Abington high school students had considered attempting suicide, with the group calling on the board to provide centralized calendaring, gym access, and grant-funding support for teen programming.
