Abington panel sets aside $350,000 for fire station furnishings, checks
Other Committee · Meeting of June 4, 2026
Abington's fire station and DPW building committee set aside $350,000 for furniture and systems commissioning as its construction contingency shrinks. The panel, guided by project managers David Ambrose and Taylor McDonald of Pomeroy Associates, ratified $335,112.39 in invoices and voted unanimously to allocate $300,000 for furniture, fixtures and equipment and $50,000 for commissioning. Treasurer Derek Hamadi reported the tally; officials said the original $2 million contingency has fallen to roughly $720,000 after more than $1.6 million in soil remediation costs, offset by a Town Meeting-approved bond.
Committee members said more than $1 million in disputed change orders, including a contractor tariff claim, were withdrawn, while a DPW-led plan to reuse clean excavated soil on town land saved additional money. Town Manager Michael Maresco warned that shared use of the site by fire, DPW and police crews needs a clear "line of demarcation," saying, "I can tell you there'll be fights if you don't." The DPW garage is targeted for December readiness, with the fire station eyed for a May or June opening.
