Abington Finance Committee approves minutes, opens FY28 budget review
Finance Committee · Meeting of September 16, 2026
Abington finance officials open FY28 budget season warning of a $7 million five-year deficit. Town Manager Michael and Town Accountant Andrew presented a forecast built on the current budget, which already relied on $3 million in free cash to balance, projecting revenue growth of about $7 million against expense growth of $11 million to $12 million over five years. Officials said a looming Plymouth County pension contribution increase to 9.5 percent, not yet reflected in the forecast, will worsen the picture starting around fiscal 2029.
Michael said potential layoffs and reduced Town Hall hours remain "on the table" in a worst-case scenario, while touting the pending sale of two schools to Causeway LLC for 56 affordable units and a fire station sale once a new public safety facility opens. "We've got to be very careful because we can't go back to the well," Michael said, referencing the town's recent override. The committee approved nine sets of prior minutes and voted to adjourn.
