Abington Board of Health Adopts Local Kratom Ban, 3-1
Board of Health · Meeting of August 24, 2026
Abington Board of Health adopts local kratom ban days ahead of state deadline. Members voted 3-1 to approve a regulation prohibiting the manufacture, sale and distribution of kratom, synthetically derived cannabinoids and unregulated novel intoxicants, with member Lisa abstaining because she had not finished reading it. The action follows Massachusetts Department of Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein's August 13 emergency order placing kratom on a temporary Schedule I classification, effective August 28.
The town rule sets a $300 daily fine per violation, plus a separate $1,000 civil penalty for retailers who also hold tobacco permits. Board member Carol said the local rule "will be there if the state should change direction over the course of the year." The board also unanimously approved a retailer notification letter and granted resident Steven Miniscalco an extra trash barrel.
