Abington schools chief says override rejection would cost 28 jobs. Superintendent Dr. Felicia Moschella told Town Meeting the school override is a "level service" request that adds nothing new, only preserving current staff and programs.
A no vote, she said, would leave a $1.6 million gap the district cannot close without cutting 28.1 positions, including four elementary classroom teachers, two reading specialists, a school adjustment counselor, more than eight secondary teachers and specialists, and 11 paraprofessionals and tutors. Moschella said over 90 percent of the school budget is personnel and fixed costs, calling the required reductions "deep, painful." She warned the losses would mean larger class sizes, fewer course offerings, and reduced early-intervention and mental health support for students.
